Tinnitus Retraining Therapie (TRT)
So far, the most promising approach for the treatment of tinnitus is the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Since the individual perception of tinnitus tends to become more acute over time, increasingly disrupting the lives of the people affected, doctors take an approach that focuses on the tinnitus sound itself – TRT. Patients learn to perceive tinnitus not as a dominant signal, but as a "background sound".
TRT is not a cure, but improves the quality of life of people suffering from tinnitus.
The therapy can be performed on all patients, irrespective of the possible cause of the tinnitus. It takes between 12 and 24 months and is divided into four stages. First, patients are informed about tinnitus and its causes. In a second step, psychological support is provided to patients during the entire treatment, in order to identify causes and effects, and develop coping strategies. The treatment is rounded off by relaxation techniques and listening therapies for managing stress as well as a process of self-reflection. If necessary, technical aids can create a low therapeutic sound that helps reduce the perception of tinnitus.
Success depends on the active participation of the patient.
